Is it possible that an AI math tutor and homeschool curriculum could be a better fit for your child than a traditional textbook or even an online curriculum?
Listen, when it comes to AI, I have tried to embrace it and also hold it at arms length at the same time!! On the one hand it seems “too good to be true” and on the other hand, it feels like it might be “an answer to prayer.” I feel that tension every time someone tells me they have an AI product that is better than what I’ve used over the past 18+ years.
On the other hand, for all of those years, helping each one of my kids learn math has been processs that we curated for all 13 years of their eduation. Every single kid had a different path. Yes, we used some curriculum for years for multiple kids. But then another season (and more babies, toddlers or teens) would change the dynamic at our house and we would reevaluate.
I’m not a super “mathy” person myself, but I know that I’m shortcutting my kids’ future opportunities if we don’t work really hard to give them a foundation they can build on as their future interests and careers. When my older kids were little, I had no idea what careers they would pick…but two of my sons ended up in STEM fields and their math education is something they needed every step of the way.
So when I was invited to try Astral an AI math tutor curriculum with my kids, I was both curious and skeptical. I didn’t think I loved the idea of any kind of AI tutor…I prefer people!
Could this option really be a better fit for some kids?
I have tried “everything” with my kids over our homeschool and school journey…but I hadn’t tried this and honestly I was so surprised by Astral Tutor!

What Is Astral? Is It an AI Math Tutor or Curriculum?
When you visit the Astral website, you’ll be greeted by an invitation to use an “AI tutor?” (Be sure to watch the video…it’s so inspirational!). But really…what is an “AI tutor?” And don’t we need curriculum too?
Astral is a platform that provides both!
When my kids signed up on the platform, our first step was a walk through of the different tools on the platform. The “tutor” is just a voice activated character that can help your kids solve math. The intro also includes this really helpful reminder to kids that getting problems wrong isn’t a problem…it’s just a step in their learning process. As a mom with kids who stress out over getting problems wrong…I loved this reminder right up front.
Next step was a placement test. The test includes 30 problems that help place your child at the best level for them to begin.
During the entire test, your child is experiencing both a curriculum and a tutor. The questions they encounter feel like a curriculum….question and answer style. But if they need help solving a problem, they can use the text prompts or the AI audio tools to talk and get help in real time…almost like a real person.
After they do the placement test…you wait…and you will get this email with an amazing report delivered to your dashboard…and your inbox. The very detailed report tells you what level your child placed in…and what skills they have mastered and where there are gaps.
Remember…this platform is AI powered…..so this is where it gets cool!
The Pros & Cons of AI In Education
AI in education is powerful—but it’s not automatically positive. Like any tool, it depends on how it’s used. Right now, many students are using AI to shortcut their learning—getting answers without understanding, solving problems without thinking, and even generating full responses with little effort. But AI also has the potential to do the exact opposite.
When used well, it can actually build a child’s thinking by guiding them through problems, asking better questions, and helping them engage more deeply with what they’re learning. Instead of replacing effort, it can support curiosity, reinforce a growth mindset, and help students learn how to think—not just what to answer. For parents, the key isn’t whether to use AI or avoid it entirely—it’s learning how to use it in a way that strengthens, rather than replaces, real learning.
This is where Astral is a valuable tool. Through multi-faceted instruction, custom lessons and learning tools, kids are taught to use what they do know plus new information to solve problems. AI is used as a tool to BUILD thinking…not replace it!
Mastery AI Math Lessons That Pivot With Your Child
Most of us have used traditional textbooks. They are a great option for many kids. However, if you have a child that has gaps in their math, then a traditional curriculum might not work. Midway through the textbook you realize they have forgotten some important skill and now you need to go find another curriculum, worksheets or videos to fill in the missing gap. It is so demotivating for kids to feel like they are “behind” or that they can’t get something.
Astral is a mastery based curriculum with a twist.
If you child starts doing lessons and they don’t understand the material, it will automatically scale the lessons down to earlier concepts that need reviewed. If they still don’t understand, Astral builds lessons that go back even further in that one area.
Your child doesn’t feel behind because they don’t know the lessons are being scaled to their needs. But you as a parent can easily keep track in your daily email reports and in the parent dashboard.
Astral is also spiral as it reviews key concepts in each level of the curriculum.
At the same time, once your child masters an area, Astral scales the content up in that skill to accelerate them much more quickly.

Tools For Success Inside Astral Tutor
Every day your child logs into Astral and begins their lessons for the day. Each lesson has about 8 questions.
Their lesson dashboard includes:
- An instruction video
- The lesson questions
- Their AI tutor (tracks their lessons and gives input when asked)
- Text-based prompts (to help solve problems)
- Visual manipulatives to help them solve concepts using numbers and pictures.
If your child gets a question wrong, they are given instruction to help them solve the problem. If they still don’t know, they can hit the help button and indicate if they haven’t learned the material or if there is any other problem. The AI then uses their interaction to adjust future lessons.
And if you as a parent find that you really need to contact a REAL person, their customer service is super responsive and you can expect a response usually the same day.
Who Is Astral Tutor Perfect For?
As a mom with lots of kids, I’ll be honest, the price tag for Astral is high enough that I might normally skip trying it. I want to be up front about that. I’m a normal mom with a budget. But I’m also a mom who will chase down solutions high and low for my kids.
If we need a solution, I WILL GET the solution.
I have gone to great lengths to get my kids the education they needed using every education format imaginable over the last 19 years. When we started homeschooling, AI was not a thing. When my older daughters S.T.R.U.G.G.L.E.D. through math, AI tutors did not exist.
If this had existed, I would have tried this with them.
If you can relate, then keep reading!
Astral is very unique…it customizes each lesson to meet your child exactly where they are at. They are no longer “behind”…and they no longer feel behind.
If you have kids that like to compare themselves to each other…not any more…everyone has their own custom track and it’s not based on a textbook level.

Astral Tutor is perfect for:
- K-8 students who enjoy working on a computer
- Students who enjoy independent learning
- Parents who have tried everything for their kids and feel like they are out of options
- Kids with learning challenges who need extra support
- Students with a variety of learning styles
Astral is an AI Tutor and curriculum. That is a very NEW concept. So this is a product that is good for the types of students I mentioned but really it’s good for parents who are willing to try new things to help their kids learn. If you are willing to push the boundaries of traditional education, this may be a great fit for your family.
Can Astral Tutor Be Used in a Co-op Or Micro-School
Yes! Astral is a great solution for homeschool groups who want to offer math but meet for only one or two days a week. Normally math is a challenge to offer in groups with mixed grades, but Astral makes it possible to do that now easier than ever! Math is a completely custom experience but using Astral, each student can have the accountability of using a math platform.
For homeschool groups and micro-schools, there is both a parent and teacher dashboard, so students have accountability and adults can track student progress.
How We Have Been And Will Continue To Use Astral
Math has been an ongoing saga for my youngest son. When he was young, he would cry over EVERY. SINGLE. PROBLEM. Eventually we found a curriculum that eased his anxiety and he made great strides. BUT we are a few years in and he really needs someone to explain some concepts and weave in reinforcements for things he should have learned earlier.
Math has been hit or miss this year largely because he was struggling to take those math facts and apply them to higher level math concepts.
When we started using Astral, I was very skeptical. Someone told me Astral was amazing…but I didn’t believe them. I sort of wanted to prove them wrong…because EdTech products have a tendency to over promise and under deliver.
Initially he started out behind…actually very behind in math. That wasn’t the biggest problem though…his lack of confidence meant he spent tons of time trying to solve a problem…and would lose even more confidence if it was wrong. We were going backwards.
After Weeks of Using Astral Tutor I Saw My Son Change..
- He became more confident
- He jumped on the computer every day happy to try the new lessons
- I saw his scores going up in the parent dashboard and daily parent emails
- His confidence in math facts grew as consistent “facts” kept showing up in his daily lessons
- He felt relieved that I couldn’t keep piling math on every day…as the lessons cap out at a daily limit
- Math has happened daily for weeks now with no complaint (that has never happened before and he is 11.)
Right now I’m seeing that Astral is an amazing fit for my son. My younger daughter prefers to work in workbooks in this season….but we do still pivot back and forth between the computer and normal curriculum because I know that half the battle is just kids developing a comfort level with new learning tools. In every season of education with our kids, it’s important to let ourselves evaluate what is and isn’t working and make changes as needed!
If you need to make math education a priority in your home and you need a more custom education, try Astral Tutor for 14 days and see if it is a great fit for your child!
Can Student’s Catch Up To Grade Level (or Accelerate) With Astral?
As a homeschool parent, I am keenly aware of how common it is for kids to “get behind” in math. Some claim that is doesn’t matter. But I know that in order for teens to do high school level math, they do need a solid foundation in working math ability. So they do need to be working toward proficiency if you want them to do those courses.
Astral Tutor is a completely custom math solution. That means it is designed to go back and repair areas where students have gaps, practice where they need repetition and then build and accelerate once they have math confidence. Once a child is confident, you can expect them to move through math content much faster.
Because the tutoring is customized, students spend time learning what they
Math Solutions Are About More Than Numbers
Over the past 19 years of homeschooling, one of the hardest things I’ve seen is when families accept their child’s struggle as a permanent situation that affects their future opportunities. I will always remember the first time I heard a mom say about her 12 year old daughter, “She doesn’t need to learn THAT because she isn’t college material.”
What? Why do parents do this? We need to stop deciding things are too hard for our kids. We need solutions instead. I absolutely understand the frustration of feeling like there are no more options…but I also know that when an option comes along, we need to try it.
Astral Tutoring is a new solution to math and after testing it with a lot of skepticism, I’m surprisingly impressed. I thought we were going to need to repeat math this year…but my son is buzzing right along happily doing his math every day now.
We plan to continue using Astral next school year as we build toward increased independence in 6th grade and beyond.
FAQ About Astral Tutor That Are Important To Me As a Mom!
Can My Child Ask This AI about non-math topics?
NO! Astral is specifically built with only math related content. If you ask it a question about another topic, it will not answer or simply redirect to math. The only “source material” it has access to is math. It is not connected to internet source material.
Will I need another math curriculum with Astral?
No, Astral is a complete math curriculum designed to follow grade-level standards and an AI tutor all-in-one! It replaces the need to buy another math curriculum.
Is it worth $100 a month? That is a lot for a math curriculum.
I’ll answer this as a mom. My son’s tutoring last year was $60/hour. He had tutoring several hours a week. This program is designed to replace a lot of one on one interaction. Now instead of waiting for tutoring, they can be guided to work through challenging problems on their own. In many cases, I think Astral could replace the need for tutoring or reduce their tutoring needs.
Will I need to help my child?
I would say that this depends on the age of the child. I was nearby as my kids were learning the platform for the first few days. It does take a minute to get used to the different features. However, now my 11 year old son is completely independent other than occasional questions where he needs extra explanation. My younger 8 year old daughter is less confident with technology so she prefers to have a parent nearby when she is working even though she doesn’t need much help. The free trial is a great way to use it for a couple of weeks and see how it works for your children.
Solid Math Skills Need Solutions That Fill In The Gaps
One of the good and bad things about math is that it is very sequential. One skill neatly builds on the next. That is a wonderful reliable fact. However, if you have a child who forgot some of those core concepts…or who never learned them, it begins to create a shaky foundation.
I think one of the most unique parts of Astral is its ability to “diagnose” what gaps each individual child has and then teach what is missing, even if it needs to go back several grade levels to teach necessary material, it can absolutely do that in a way that is seamless for the student. Normally “tutoring” reinforces that a child has weakness in an area, but in this case, skills can be shored up without them even being aware that there was a gap in the first place.
If you are tired of fighting the math battles…or have a kid that loves tech, or one that needs some extra help, checkout AstralTutor.com and do a 14 day free trial to see if it would work for your kid!
