Parents of teens and young adults can probably relate to the struggle of staying ahead when it comes to topics like Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, blockchain, and cybersecurity. Most homeschool curricula focus on traditional graduation requirements such as math, science, English, and history. Meanwhile, technology continues to reshape the world our children are entering.

As a mom of nine kids, I have listened to conversations about cryptocurrency, investing, cybersecurity, coding, and digital technology around my dinner table for years. Some of my children have been fascinated by these topics long before I understood what they were talking about.

My oldest son works as a software developer and has participated in cybersecurity exercises as part of his career. Sometimes when he described his work, it honestly felt like I was listening to a science fiction movie. I found myself wondering how so much of modern life had become dependent on digital systems that I barely understood.

As someone with both feet firmly planted in the “real world,” I have often struggled to understand the fascination with digital currencies, online investing, blockchain technology, and cybersecurity. Yet whether we understand it or not, these technologies are increasingly becoming part of everyday life.

That is why Mr. D’s Blockchain Beginner Course meets a genuine need in the homeschool space.

The Day Security Mattered In Our Home

About three years ago, digital security stopped being an abstract concept in our family.

One afternoon, while rushing to gather my children at a bowling alley, I received a phone call. My phone flagged it as a potential scam, but I was distracted and in a hurry. The caller claimed to be from my bank and informed me that my account had been compromised.

You can probably guess where this story is headed.

Before I realized what was happening, I had provided enough information for scammers to gain access to our accounts. Over the following months, they emptied our bank account. We spent four months closing accounts, opening new ones, filing paperwork, and trying to restore normalcy.

The experience changed the way I think about digital security.

It also reinforced an important lesson: smart people can make mistakes when they don’t fully understand the systems they are using.

Later, one of our sons became interested in Bitcoin and cryptocurrency investing. Like many young adults, he was curious and eager to learn. Unfortunately, curiosity without education can be expensive.

After opening a credit card to begin building credit, he realized he could use that credit card to purchase investments. His plan was simple: buy investments, sell them later for a profit, and come out ahead.

Instead, he lost thousands of dollars.

While the experience ultimately became a valuable life lesson, it also highlighted how important it is for young adults to understand risk, investing, digital assets, and financial decision-making before they begin experimenting on their own.

Looking back, a course like Mr D’s Blockchain Beginner – The Genesis Block could have helped prepare both my son and me for those conversations.

What Is Blockchain Beginner – The Genesis Block?

Blockchain Beginner – The Genesis Block is an introductory course designed to help students understand cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, digital security, and the broader digital economy. The course is specifically designed for beginners and does not require a technical background.

Students begin with foundational concepts such as Bitcoin, digital wallets, and how modern financial systems work. From there, they explore blockchain technology, online security, cryptocurrency terminology, research skills, civic engagement, and career opportunities related to blockchain and Web3 technologies.

I love this because it provides the foundation for those independent decisions teens and young adults want to make, but it gives them the information they need to succeed.

Course Details

  • This course is designed for high school but I recommend parents actually follow along in order to have some of the better conversations.
  • Number of Lessons: 11 lessons broken into sub-lessons

The course is a compilation of lessons from Blockchain industry leaders intentionally combined to give your student a solid foundation. Because the videos are coming from different leaders, sometimes it felt like a lot of different video styles were included…but the knowledge of the teaching team is top notch!

What Students Learn in the Blockchain Course

When we got into the course, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I wasn’t familiar with blockchain terminology at all. While blockchain is often associated with Bitcoin and digital currency, it isn’t the term that I greatly appreciated that it went much further beyond those basic concepts. Included in the course teens learn about:

Understanding Digital Money

Students learn how money has evolved over time and how cryptocurrencies fit into the larger financial system. Rather than treating cryptocurrency as a trend, the course helps students understand the broader context of how money works.

Blockchain Fundamentals

The course introduces blockchain technology in a beginner-friendly way and explains concepts such as decentralization, transparency, and trustless systems without requiring technical expertise. If you have a teen who is planning to go into a tech field, this explanation will be especially helpful.

Digital Security

In my opinion, this may be one of the most valuable parts of the course….obviously based on my experience! As young people go out into the world, part of adulting well is learning how to manage their digital presence and security. These practices apply to everything from passwords and finances to even things like online dating and making friends online.

When I think about the many people that I first met online…before meeting in real life, it makes me realize even more how important it is to teach discernment.

In this course, Students learn practical online security habits and strategies for protecting themselves, their accounts, and their digital assets from scams, hacks, and common mistakes.

Research Skills

Learning how to research and ask intelligent questionsOne lesson focuses on helping students evaluate information independently. Instead of relying on hype, influencers, social media, or friends’ opinions, students learn how to research projects and ask thoughtful questions before making decisions.

Civic Engagement and Public Policy

The course also explores how governments, regulations, and public policy interact with emerging technologies like cryptocurrency. Students learn how citizens can engage in discussions surrounding these topics in an informed and responsible way.

Blockchain Careers

Students are introduced to a variety of career opportunities related to blockchain technology, including both technical and non-technical roles. This helps broaden their understanding of potential future career paths.

One of the best things we did for my oldest son was pursue courses and experiences related to tech fields while he was homeschooled. He did everything from game design, to programming and talking to people in the field. As a result, he was very well prepared going into his degree and after a couple of years secured a full time internship that turned into a full time career after graduation.

Career education is an excellent component of this course.

It Focuses on Education Rather Than Hype

One of my biggest concerns with many discussions surrounding cryptocurrency is that they often focus on getting rich quickly. It was that trap that led my own son to jump in before he knew what he was doing. This course takes a different approach. Instead of encouraging speculation, it focuses on understanding, research, responsibility, and informed decision-making.

This is the kind of careful thinking that we want for teens in many areas of life!

It Helps Parents Stay Current

Many parents feel overwhelmed by how quickly technology changes. I absolutely have felt that way over the years as my teens knowledge surpassed my own. This course provides a structured introduction that can help parents and teens learn together and have more meaningful conversations about topics that are increasingly affecting everyday life.

Even if your teen never purchases a single cryptocurrency, the lessons on online security, evaluating information, researching claims, and understanding digital systems are valuable life skills.

Who Is This Course Perfect For?

This course may be a great fit for:

  • Teens interested in technology, computer science, or cybersecurity
  • Students curious about Bitcoin or cryptocurrency
  • Families wanting to improve digital literacy
  • Young adults preparing for financial independence

Things Parents Should Know

This is an introductory course designed for beginners. Students looking for advanced programming, blockchain development, or technical certification training will likely need additional courses later.

However, for families seeking a broad overview of cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, digital security, and related topics, this course provides a solid foundation.

Final Thoughts

We spend years teaching our teens how to do every kind of lifeskill, many still enter adulthood with very little education about digital security, online investing, cryptocurrency, and the technologies shaping the future.

I think this is simply a gap many of us as parents are realizing we do need to fill but aren’t really sure what we should cover.

Whether cryptocurrency becomes a major part of our future or not, today’s teens are already living in a digital world. They will encounter online financial systems, cybersecurity concerns, digital assets, and rapidly changing technologies throughout their lives.

Blockchain Beginner – The Genesis Block helps students build a foundation for understanding those changes while encouraging critical thinking, responsible decision-making, and informed participation in an increasingly digital society.

For families looking to better understand cryptocurrency, blockchain, and online security together, this course provides an accessible starting point.
