One of the best parts of homeschooling is the opportunity to align the study of subjects like science and history. Even science in the beginning. Most of us grew up getting an education that taught each subject separately. Every day at school would include separate blocks of time to cover math, science, history, and language arts. Toss in special classes like PE, art, and music, and everything had its own neat little box.
When I started homeschooling, I kept the same boxes. But a couple of years in, at my son’s hybrid homeschool group, I learned about the rotation of the classical history cycle. Wow—amazing. I had gaps in my own knowledge that this covered. But the whole cycle idea really blew me away when I realized that you could stack other subjects into the cycle. Crazy!
Now, science could connect to history, as well as other related subjects. It was in the middle of that realization that I was first introduced to Berean Builders science courses. We were getting ready to study ancient history, and they had a Science in the Ancient World book that aligned with discoveries made at that time period. Amazing.

So, for four years, our co-op followed that cycle and used Berean Builders science books that aligned with our language arts and history. It was fantastic. But, during that time, I never had the chance to use the very first book in their elementary science series called Science in the Beginning. So when I had a chance to use it with my son, I was excited to do so.
Science in the Beginning covers the six days of creation—the science and scientific concepts laid out in the book of Genesis in the first six days of creation, because on the seventh day, God rested.

What Is Science in the Beginning by Berean Builders?
Science in the Beginning by Berean Builders is a Christian homeschool science curriculum designed for elementary students that uses the seven days of Creation in Genesis as the framework for learning science.
Instead of organizing science by topics like plants, weather, or animals, this course walks students through what God created and the scientific concepts connected to each day of Creation. Over the course of the year, students are learning real science concepts while also understanding where those things fit into the bigger picture of God’s creation.
This is the first book in Berean Builders Elementary Science series, which uses a chronological approach to science, helping students see how scientific understanding has developed over time — starting with Creation itself.
Connecting Science to Faith
One of the things that makes this homeschool elementary science curriculum stand out is that it doesn’t separate faith and science — it connects them.
While some people want to teach topics like faith and academics completely separately, for kids it often makes more sense if we acknowledge how all of life is connected…because it is.
And while creation is filled with science, is rarely ever explored with kids. Instead we teach Genesis as being about our faith and miss the opportunity to look at our physical world and use it to learn about God.
In Berean Builders textbooks, science is about understanding the world God created — and in doing so, learning more about Him. Science is not seperate from faith -it’s connected to it. Science in the Beginning offers a wonderful way to explore the way God created the world with order, purpose and design.

Science in the Beginning Lessons and Structure
This textbook is designed as a full-year homeschool science curriculum and includes reading, experiments and review questions targeting different ages and abilities. It includes 90 lessons…15 for each of the 6 days of Creation.
Each lesson is intentionally short and manageable — usually less than three pages of reading. Having used many science textbooks for elementary, I have used some science courses in the past that 6-7x as much reading which was unsustainable for me as a mom. I simply cannot (and will not) read aloud that many pages to my kids!
I’m a huge believer in the idea that a curriculum has to work for the parents AND the kids!
There are actually two types of lessons built into Science in the Beginning:
- Normal Lessons (12 per creation day)
- Challenge Lessons (3 per creation day)
The challenge lessons are optional and are designed to go deeper for older or more advanced students.
This gives you a TON of flexibility as a parent which I appreciate. This textbook can flex to work for science just one or two days a week. It can work for older or younger students and the challenge lessons are perfect for older kids or those that love science!
Science in the Industrial Age Homeschool Curriculum Review

Using Science in the Beginning in a Homeschool Co-op
If you are part of a Chrisitian homeschool co-op, Science in the Beginning could be a natural fit for your group.
If you are doing a classical curriculum, the other four books in this series may align with your history dates more than this one. However, this one could be used alongside Science in the Ancient world if you wanted to scale the use of this text and then cover the next one…both during one school year.
Or if your co-op does not follow a classical cycle, this book would be a really wonderful elementary science course to offer that allows kids to explore faith and science together.. Berean Builders has everything you need to teach each textbook…notebooking pages, a supply list and more. As a co-op teacher, it is easy to prep for this class as experiment details are all spelled out. discussion questions are in the book and they do have the optional notebook pages that you can print for students as homework.
Who Is Berean Builder’s Science Perfect For?
One of my goals with any review is to identify who a curriculum is really helpful for. I can personally attest the the frustration of having shelves of unused curriculum because it wasn’t a good fit when I bought it!
- Berean Builder’s Science for all ages is designed for families who value a Christian worldview.
- The elementary series is perfect if you want a history-science connection
- It’s great for busy families where all elementary-aged kids can learn together.
- Perfect for developing independence – the readings are only a few pages.
- Designed to support learning at a variety of levels.
My kids tend to do a lot of science. They learn in co-op, at home, in the garden, in the kitchen and out in nature. My husband is an R.N., so he is always sharing things with them too.
I like that this curriculum scales. If you are super busy…just read the lesson. If your kids are hands on learners…do the experiments. If you want more…do the discussion questions. Obviously doing all of it is the BEST…but sometimes we have to pick and choose what we can cover and this curriculum scales well!

Science That Grows From Elementary to High School
One of the things I appreciate about Berean Builders is their commitment to teach children and teens about the world around us. They do this through curriculum that connects with kids at their level and includes a ton of hands on learning. By the time your kids get to high school, its time to really prepare them well for college or the next thing with high quality lab courses that will challenge them to follow the scientfic method and learn a systematic way to approach science.
What Is Quality Homeschool High School Science Curriculum?
As a parent of adult kids in STEM careers, I can attest to the importance of having science that is both fun and increasingly rigorous as they get older. My oldest son is a software developer and my second son is a Chemical Engineering major in the U.S. Navy Nuclear program. If someone told me 15 years ago that my little boy was going to work on a nuclear reactor, I would not have believed them!
The repetitions of consistent quality science matter and Berean Builders provides the building blocks your kids need at all ages.
