Music is something we all want our kids to learn, but as a homeschool mom, I have always found it difficult to integrate it into our homeschool course work load.

Of course its not just music, its all the extras that are messy, loud or have a lot of pieces. I felt like over the last 18 years, I always started with the best intentions…but found that doing all the curriculum I bought was literally impossible….if I did it alone!

What that meant for my kids was that music lessons were very inconsistent. One might get a few lessons at co-op, another took piano from grandma and another took violin lessons for a year. I have 9 kids though….count that up…most of them got little to no music education! It mostly fell through the cracks. It’s not something I’m proud of but truly there wasn’t an easy affordable option.

What We Loved About Our Music Duo Academy Course

With any kind of homeschool course, I think there are 2 sides to the coin. The parent and the kid side!

1. As a parent, I loved that the course we took (Pre-Apprentice 2) was both comprehensive and EASY for me to use. It didn’t require any prep (other than buying optional instruments to accompany the course). Otherwise…it was so easy to simply turn it on and let the kids learn!
2. My kids on the other hand laughed a lot. It was fun watching them tapping along and bebopping to the sounds. Having them do the lessons together was definitely hilarious as they fed off each other’s laughter.

Other things we liked about our course:

• Confidence-building: My kids didn’t need any prior experience—they felt successful from the very first lesson.
• Flexibility: Lessons are short, self-paced, and easy to fit into a homeschool rhythm.
• Engagement: From singing games to moving their bodies, the lessons weren’t just “sit and watch”—they were active and fun.
• Parent-friendly: I didn’t need a music background. My role was simply to encourage and participate when needed.

The full-year program we took is designed for 1st and 2nd graders who are brand new to music, but my son who is in 5th also enjoyed the lessons alongside his sister. With pre-recorded video lessons and a gentle pace, my kids were able to explore singing, rhythm, instruments, and even creative movement—all with the ability to laugh and join in!

What’s Inside Pre-Apprentice 2

Music Duo Academy has a bunch of different courses but our kids did Pre-Apprentice 2 which is designed for 35 weeks of instruction (or one-year access). I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of concepts taught in the lessons. As a non-music person, I would have no idea how to go about covering these ideas and Miss Linda does an amazing job of weaving so many ideas together into one fun class.

Variety of Skills & Concepts Taught:

• Music Reading & Rhythm: so, mi, la; quarter notes, eighth notes, rests; reading on a 3-line and 5-line staff.
• Beat & Meter: strong and weak beats, accents, 2-meter, and the difference between beat and rhythm.
• Instrument Skills: mallet technique and simple bordun patterns.
• Creative & Expressive Movement: body percussion, locomotor and non-locomotor movement, imaginative expression.
• Musical Elements: forte/piano, allegro/largo, ostinato, and motives (same/different).
• Instrument Exploration: listening and moving to music featuring flute, violin, and piano.
• Words That Sing: on-screen lyrics help kids follow along and boost reading skills naturally.

The first six lessons gently introduce foundational skills and songs from Apprentice 1 (so kids don’t miss anything). Beginning with Lesson 7, the course follows the same path as Apprentice 2, meaning families don’t need to purchase both.

Who This Curriculum Is Perfect For

Music Duo Academy courses are perfect for the family that wants to make sure their K-6 elementary kids get a well-rounded music education but doesn’t want to leave the house to do so. I personally do not have a music background and also don’t want to drive to find lessons!

These lessons remind me so much of the wonderful music teacher I had in elementary school. When we tried it out, my kids could not stop laughing as they bopped, flapped, hopped, and tapped to the beat. They had so much fun.

I love that these courses are designed to teach in a way that is fun and exciting. I also love that as a mom, I can just turn on the next lesson and they can learn and enjoy.
