When you have a child that needs to catch up in math, it can feel like a daunting task. CTCMath provides excellent tools to help you do just that.

Do you feel like your child is falling behind in math? Whether they’re struggling with basic mathematics skills or more challenging math concepts, catching up can seem impossible. But with CTCMath, a flexible and easy-to-use math program, students can master skills they are missing while gaining confidence in their abilities.

As a mom of 9, I have kids will all kinds of natural math ability. Some LOVE math…and others struggle. When 9 year old son was a struggling student. From the time he started Kindergarten, when he looked numbers, he would quickly become overwhelmed…and would soon be a bucket of tears.

Math Was HARD!

Over time, I realize that different things were causing overwhelm…moving too fast, too many problems on a page…and not being ready to math. He was great at reading…but math was the worst!

Why Students Fall Behind In Math

Sometimes students miss important key math concepts as they move from one topic to the next. For example, third-grade students might forget place value, or sixth-grade students might struggle with fractions. Missing these skills makes future math classes more difficult.

While those problems are common to almost everyone, many homeschool families have a student that is year or more behind in math. There are many reasons this can happen. My own son struggled to remember basic addition facts the first few years of elementary. An older son had problems reading that caused some delays in math. And then of course, many families have had a year where life goes sideways and they just don’t get math done.

Whatever the reason, there are many reasons why a student may get behind in math.

As a result, you see parents doubting their ability to teach their students, frustrated students and a fear that they will never “catch up.”

This is where CTCMath steps in. We have experienced first hand how this curriculum offers students a path to get caught up to grade-level math.

Does Being “Caught Up” To Grade-Level Math Matter?

In homeschool circles, you will often hear little bits of “wisdom” shared that say something like, “There is no such as being “behind” when you homeschool, just work at your own pace.” And there is some truth to that. Our kids DO learn at different paces. And they often learn some subjects easier than others.

However, there are times when it might be essential for them to be working on grade-level math.

For example, if your child is in high school and wants to take Chemistry, they usually need to have taken Algebra. Of perhaps you have a child that you want to put in a hybrid program or school at some point, they also might need to “catch up” so they can be working at grade-level with peers in those kinds of programs.

Of course there are other reason. It’s not wrong if you want to help your kids catch up to grade-level math…whatever the reason. And its fine if you want them to work at their own pace as long as you know that there may be some opportunities that are limited if they are “behind” in math.

How CTCMath Helps Students Catch Up In Math

One of the things I love about CTCMath, is that a subscription includes all the content for every grade level—from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Often when a student needs to “catch up,” it doesn’t mean they are missing ALL of the concepts taught in a certain grade level. In math, it might mean they need earlier concepts repeated. Or it can mean they are missing MOST of the content of a grade level…but not all.

This is an important distinction. When you help a student who is behind in math, your goal is to help students master math concepts they are missing…not go back and do one or more years of full curriculum.

CTCMath is organized in a way that let’s you as the parent choose from ALL the K-12 math lessons and assign the content that YOUR student needs to repeat or learn.

For example, if you have a child that doesn’t understand time, you can get them “caught up” learning time by simply going back and assigning all the time lessons from multiple grades. And voila…caught up on time.

Maybe your child understands money….so you skip all the money lessons. And on and on. You assign what they need and nothing more.

Two Ways to Catch Up With CTC Math

1. The first way to “catch up” is to simply accelerate through the math. My son who was 2 years behind in math now loves it due to CTCMath and easily does 3 lessons a day. He will will be on grade level by the end of the school year.

CTCMath lessons are much shorter than a traditional math lesson. Students only see one problem at a time which makes it less stressful for students who may already struggle with math. If you choose to “catch up” by doubling down on extra lessons, this is much less daunting that with a full textbook course.

2. The second way is to create a personal math track for your student where you assign lessons to your student in the areas they need review or that are most important for the “next thing.”

Steps To Use The CTCMath Dashboard to Create a Personal Math Track

Whether your student needs a review of a few concepts…or a whole lot more, the “Tasks” feature in CTC Math puts you in the drivers seat and let’s you direct the skills your student learns which is helpful if you are trying to help a student catch up in math.

How To Create A Personal Math Track

1. Login to the Parent Dashboard

2. Select “Tasks” from the top toolbar.

3. Click the blue button with a “Plus sign” on it to create a new task.

4. Select the date the lesson shows up in the task bar…and the date its due.

5. Choose from the options with checkboxes…including whether you want to hide the grade level of the assigned work.

6. Choose the lesson(s) or diagnostic tests to include. It will prepopulate with every lesson K-12. Select either the course/grade level to choose lesson from or the “stream” option to pick from concepts you want your child to learn.

7. Select the child you want to assign the task to.

8. Click Save

Go through all the lessons you want your child to do right now and schedule them out. You can take on a small project…only a few weeks or you can choose to schedule out the whole school year this way. Creating a custom math course for your student allows them to work on the skills they are lacking and to catch up by doing multiple assignments a day, skipping things they know and only working on the essentials!
