Many parents I meet and speak with tell me, “My child doesn’t have access to a digital device” or “My child only has supervised online time.” These are very valid and useful strategies; however, teaching our children key skills about cybersecurity and online privacy is a practical life skill in today’s world.
Just as we teach them about safety in the real world—such as looking both ways before crossing the street, always wearing a seatbelt in a car, or treating others with respect and kindness—we must also teach them about cybersecurity and online privacy. Providing our children with these skills can give parents and guardians confidence that their children are navigating the cyber world safely and know what to do if something doesn’t feel right.
Why Humans Are the Weakest Link
Humans are often the weakest link in cybersecurity. Studies have shown that up to 90% of cyberattacks are due to human error.
Children are still in the process of developing their behaviors and attitudes and are more receptive to learning new skills and adapting to new ways of thinking. Many parents I meet tell me they are concerned about their kids being online because they are not as “technically savvy” as their children. In all honesty, this may never change—but arming children with knowledge about opportunities and dangers can only lead to a positive outcome.
By teaching children about the importance of cybersecurity, we can raise a generation that is more aware of the risks of cybercrime and has the skills to protect themselves and others. Children who develop good cyber hygiene habits at a young age are more likely to carry these habits into adulthood, making them less likely to fall victim to cybercrime in the future.
How Cybersecurity Education Protects Families
Educating kids about the basics of cybersecurity can have a significantly positive impact on families, as many families are not cyber aware and are vulnerable to cyber threats. Children who learn about cybersecurity can become a valuable resource for their families, sharing their knowledge and skills to help protect devices and online activities.
This is particularly important given the growing threat of cybercrime against families, which often targets vulnerable family members such as grandparents and parents. Preventing these attacks includes teaching children about topics such as:
